What is Lead2Change?
Lead2Change is Milwaukee’s premier career-readiness organization, dedicated to preparing high school students for success in college, their future careers, and their communities. Through engaging programs and real-world experiences, we equip young people with the skills they need to thrive and become leaders who make a difference. Since 2011, we have empowered over 1,000 students, offering pathways to personal growth, professional development, and community impact. If your child is motivated to grow, learn, and challenge themselves, Lead2Change is a perfect fit!
What is the Dream.Explore.Build. (D.E.B.) program?
Dream.Explore.Build. (D.E.B.) is the signature program of Lead2Change, designed as an 11-month immersive career-readiness experience for high school students. It offers 300 hours of hands-on instruction, career exploration, and paid internships. Students engage in workshops focused on essential skills like time, conflict, and money management while receiving personalized feedback and mentorship from industry professionals. By the end of the program, participants emerge as confident leaders, prepared to excel in their community and chosen fields.
Are there any costs associated with the program?
No, there are absolutely no costs for students to participate in Lead2Change programming! We believe that every student should have access to opportunities for career exploration and skill-building without financial barriers. Plus, students who successfully complete the program during the academic year are eligible for a paid summer internship, allowing them to gain valuable work experience while earning an income.
How does my child apply for the program?
Applying is simple! Dream.Explore.Build. accepts applications once a year. When the application window opens, students can submit their applications through our website. The process includes completing a brief form and participating in an interview. We will announce the application period on our website and social media channels to ensure you stay updated on this exciting opportunity.
What support will my child receive during the program?
Our team is here every step of the way! Students receive personalized guidance from skilled professionals, feedback from peers, and access to a network of mentors, including an accountability coach. Regular progress evaluations, individual attention, and encouragement create a supportive environment where every student can thrive.
What is Perspective Media?
Perspective Media is a unique opportunity for aspiring photographers, videographers, and film editors. Students learn advanced filming and editing techniques from an industry expert while capturing the exciting moments of Lead2Change programs. It’s a perfect fit for creative students who want to build their portfolios and gain hands-on experience in media production.
What is Lead2Change Interact?
Lead2Change Interact, in partnership with the Mequon Rotary After Hours Club, provides students with local and international leadership and community service opportunities. Participants connect with leaders, engage in service projects, and learn about the importance of “Service above Self.” It’s a fantastic way for students to develop leadership skills and gain a global perspective.
What are the program locations and formats?
All sessions for Lead2Change programming are offered in person, either at a community partner site or a participating school. We believe that in-person engagement is essential for building strong relationships, fostering teamwork, and creating a hands-on learning environment. This approach allows students to fully immerse themselves in activities, connect more deeply with mentors and peers, and develop the confidence needed to succeed in real-world settings.
How much time does my child need to commit to the program?
The Dream.Explore.Build. program spans 11 months, with students dedicating time to workshops, hands-on training, and their paid internships. We recommend that students be prepared to commit around 6-8 hours a week, which includes both in-person classes and self-reflection assignments.
How does Lead2Change ensure a safe and supportive environment for students?
Student safety and well-being are our highest priorities. All our programs are led by trained and vetted professionals who foster a safe and inclusive atmosphere. We collaborate with local schools and community organizations to ensure students receive the necessary support throughout their journey with us. This commitment helps create an environment where students can thrive and focus on their personal and professional growth.
What opportunities are available for Lead2Change graduates?
Our graduates have achieved impressive success, going on to thrive in college, secure competitive internships, and launch careers in a variety of fields. We’re proud of the lasting impact our program has on students, and we’re continually working to keep in touch with former participants to support their ongoing growth. By joining Lead2Change, your child will become part of a community of driven and inspiring young leaders.
What volunteer opportunities are available for parents?
Parents who want to support Lead2Change can get involved by volunteering for events, mentoring students, or helping with program logistics. Your involvement can significantly enrich the program and provide valuable support for students.
Additionally, here are some ways you can support your student on their journey:
-
Ask them about what they learned in class. Showing interest in their progress can encourage them to stay engaged.
-
Attend the commitment ceremony and any important parent meetings. Your presence means a lot to your student and helps you stay informed.
-
Avoid calling your student during class. This helps them stay focused and fully engaged in their learning.
-
Please refrain from picking them up early. Students are rewarded for their commitment to the program, and being on time is important. Arriving late, leaving early, or using their phone during class can affect their monthly incentives.
-
Review emails you are copied on and feel free to ask questions. Staying informed helps you better support your student.
-
Join us at the year-end celebration. Your student has worked hard, and your support makes the achievement even more special.
