Lead2Change DreamBuilders Participate in Resume Writing Boot Camp

Do you want to know how we know that our DreamBuilders want to achieve their dreams? On one of the coldest weekends of the year, they spent multiple hours over the course of a Friday and Saturday learning about resumes, drafting resumes, and editing their resumes until they were perfect.

They could have been anywhere else, but instead they were attending our annual Resume Writing Boot Camp at Goodwill Greater Milwaukee & Chicago.

Before putting pen to paper, they spent time learning about who they are and what they want their futures to look like.

“So first, building them up as people to help pull out what is inside of them and put it on paper so they can present themselves to future employers,” said Markesha Hilliard, Program Services Manager at Lead2Change.

With the help and encouragement of Lead2Change staff, our amazing volunteers, and their own peers, our DreamBuilders took a deep dive into identifying the skills and experience they already possess.

“I had already had a resume made from two years ago, but then going into this boot camp, I realized I missed a lot of stuff and I’m going back-and-forth like, ‘What can I add? What can I do to make this look good and more professional?’” said DreamBuilder Daniela.

Another one of our DreamBuilders, Tatiyana, said organizations like Lead2Change provide opportunities to meet others and get advice from experts, while also uncovering parts of herself.

“It just feels very empowering in a way to like to realize new aspects of myself that I didn’t really realize.”

That inner reflection and the confidence it instills is why Lead2Change is such a transformative experience for our DreamBuilders.

“It’s really important for organizations to show kids that it is okay to be a critical thinker about your future. That you can’t just put in an AI prompt and it tells you what your future is, but you get an opportunity to see yourself as a leader because someone is in front of you telling you that you are. Preparing a resume, preparing yourself for your future, being in community with folks who believe in you, you’re not going to get that from an AI prompt. We’re real people doing real work for a real future,” said Mrs. Hilliard.

A boot camp offering students a chance to get ahead as they prepare for college and their careers.
